Four-Five Weeks from Conception

Did you know the chance of your being born was one in 200 million? See what a miracle you are? At just 18 days after conception, the heart begins to beat. At four to five weeks you can see it on the ultrasound. Because the beginnings of all essential structures are formed during the embryonic period, the fourth to eighth weeks constitute the most critical period of development. The embryo measures (4 - 5 mm) about the size of an apple seed. The heart began beating at day 18. The yolk sac can be seen by ultrasound and supplies the blood cells until the liver begins to function. This small 4 wk. embryo is growing at a rapid rate and is ten thousand times larger that the fertilized egg. The embryo grows about 1 mm (or.04") per day. During the 5th week you can begin to identify the formation of the head and body. Just look at this 4-week-old baby. The beginning stumps of the arms and legs are beginning to show. The embryo floats freely in the amniotic fluid, which will cushion and protect the baby through the nine months he will spend in his mother's womb.

Seven Weeks from Conception

As the embryo reaches the second month it will measure approximately one third of an inch. Slow fetal movement can be observed at this time. The synaptic function of the nervous system is developed to demonstrate flexion of the neck and trunk. The dark circles of the eyes are the retina. The beginning stumps of the arms and legs are beginning to grow. The embryo floats freely in the amniotic fluid, which will cushion and protect the baby through the nine months it will spend in their mother's womb.

10 Weeks from Conception

At ten weeks, the fetus is two and a half inches long and floats in the amniotic sac, which by now has filled the whole uterus. Vigorous activity can be seen as the baby kicks, jumps, turns somersaults, grasps with fingers, opens his mouth and suck his thumb. Bones, muscles and the nervous system continue to develop. The fetus has begun to breath the amniotic fluid, but does not drown because it gets oxygen from the umbilical cord.

15 weeks from Conception

The neurological structures necessary to feel pain are in place between the 8 and 13 ½ weeks and evident by the reaction to stimuli. Centers of ossification have appeared in most of the fetal bones. The fingers and toes have become differentiated and are provided with nails, scattered rudiments of hair appear; and the external genitalia are beginning to show definite signs of male or female sex. There is still a lot of room in the womb, and the baby is busy utilizing his private playground. He resembles an astronaut as he floats and jumps around.

Final Stages During the last three months before birth, the baby's weight will triple to more than seven pounds, and grow to approximately 20 inches. The living quarters become very cramped! Scroll your mouse over the picture to see this baby stick his tong out at you. Approximately one week before the 40th week, the infant stops growing and drops his head down into the mother's pelvis. Now mom and baby wait for the big day which begins with the baby, not the mother, sending a signal to start the contractions.
